CBI to exhume bodies of Badaun gang-rape victims on 20 July
CBI spokesman says a medical board has recommended that the bodies be exhumed for further investigation
New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday said that it will exhume the bodies of the two victims of the Badaun gang-rape and murder on 20 July.
A medical board had recommended that the bodies be exhumed for further investigation, a CBI spokesman said.
The federal agency had taken over the case on 12 June after it was asked to investigate the gang-rape and murder of two girls aged 14 and 15 at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, which sparked an outcry in the country.
The case was transferred to CBI after questions were raised about the manner in which the probe was handled by the Uttar Pradesh state police. The girls went missing on 27 May and were found hanging from a tree the next day. On 1 June, the state police arrested three men who allegedly committed the crime. On 6 June, the state government set up a special investigation team to probe the matter, before referring the matter to the CBI.
