Congress wins 3 by-poll seats in Uttarakhand
The Congress wins the Doiwala, Someshwar and Dharchula seats against BJP candidates
New Delhi: After its worst performance in the recently concluded general elections, the Congress party on Friday had some cheer come its way when it won all three seats in the Uttarakhand assembly by-elections, pushing the Congress-led state government to a majority.
The Congress won the Doiwala, Someshwar and Dharchula seats against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates, with chief minister Harish Rawat winning the Dharchula seat.
The Congress party’s tally in the 70-member assembly has now improved to 35. The party had failed to muster a majority in the 2012 assembly elections and depended on outside support.
In the just concluded general elections, the party had lost all five seats to the BJP.
Elated at its by-poll performance, Congress leaders in the state said it was an indication that the “so-called Modi wave is on the ebb". “Uttarakhand by-poll results, which have been overwhelmingly in favour of the Congress, show that the Modi magic has begun to fade," Pradesh Congress Committee spokesman Dhirendra Pratap claimed.
