New Delhi: A special court on Wednesday summoned industrialist and senior Congress leader Naveen Jindal and 14 others to the court on 22 May in connection with a case of suspected irregularities in the allocation of a coal block in Jharkhand.

Special judge Bharat Parashar acted on the basis of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chargesheet in the case related to the allocation of the Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in 2008.

The CBI in April booked 15 people, including former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, former Union minister of state for coal Dasari Narayana Rao, ex-coal secretary H.C. Gupta, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL), Jindal Realty Pvt. Ltd, Gagan Sponge Iron Pvt. Ltd (now called Gagan Infraenergy Ltd), New Delhi Exim Pvt. Ltd and Sowbhagya Media Ltd.

The suspects have been booked under various sections for suspected criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust by a public servant, cheating and also under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The court said in its order that it was convinced that on the face of it, these offences had been committed.

“We deny all allegations made against our company and its management. We will be availing appropriate remedy in accordance with law. We have full faith in our judiciary and are confident to come out clean during the process," said a Jindal spokesperson, in an emailed response.

Gupta declined to comment.

Specifically, Rao and Gupta were booked under charges of criminal breach of trust, criminal misconduct as under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

JSPL, Gagan Infraenergy and Naveen Jindal also got booked for cheating.

Last year, the apex court had cancelled the allocations of 204 coal blocks allotted between 1993 and 2010. The blocks allocated to JSPL between 1996 and 2009 for itself and as part of a partnership were Gare Palma IV/1 (1996), Gare Palma IV/2 (1998), Gare Palma IV/3 (1998), Gare Palma IV/6 (2006) in Chhattisgarh, Utkal B-I (2003), Ramchandi Promotional (2009), Urtan North (2009) in Odisha and Jitpur (2007) and Amarkonda Murgadangal (2008) in Jharkhand.

These translated into reserves of 2.59 billion tonnes, or 5.97% of the 43.35 billion tonnes given out by the centre.
