New Delhi: There is no meeting scheduled between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor D. Subbarao on Monday, a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.
However, Subbarao is scheduled to meet finance minister P. Chidambaram later this afternoon.
Earlier, the organizers of a Mumbai event where Subbarao was expected to deliver a speech on Monday said the RBI governor has cancelled the appearance as he was called to a meeting with the country’s finance minister and the prime minister.
Chidambaram met Manmohan Singh on Monday morning to discuss the economic situation. Chidambaram is understood to have discussed the rupee woes and macro economic situation with the prime minister.
The rupee on Monday dropped to 60.005 against the dollar while the wholesale prices rose 4.86% in June compared with 4.7% in May.
Rupee had earlier in the month touched an all-time high of 61.21 per dollar.
Among the measures considered by the government to stem the rupee’s fall include floating sovereign bonds overseas.
