Bangalore: A six-year-old girl student was allegedly raped in a public school, triggering severe protests from outraged parents who stormed the institution demanding action against the guilty, suspecting involvement of the staffers.

The girl was allegedly raped by “unknown persons" at Vibgyor High School, which came to light on 15 July, JCP K.V. Sharat Chandra said, even as the incensed parents demanded answers from the management about the alleged involvement
of two staffers. Chandra said the girl was sent for medical examination and the forensic science laboratory’s report was awaited. A probe was underway and no arrests had been made so far, he said.

“We are still making inquiry," ACP (crime) Pranab Mohanty said, when asked if any detention or arrests had been made.

Swarming the school since morning, the parents accused the management of being “insensitive" and not forthcoming with information and tried to force their way into the building.

Police were summoned as protests grew while the management went into a huddle with enraged parents demanding action against the guilty, saying they would not send their children to the school as they were not sure of their safety. Window glasses were broken in the melee as police tried to control the protesters who were in no mood to listen.

As protests became fierce, school chairman Rustom Kerawala, emerged and told the agitated parents, “If somebody is found guilty of raping, let him be hanged."

Kerawala said the school management was co-operating with authorities. “We are waiting for the final conclusion from authorities." His attempts to pacify the parents saying “safety of the child is paramount," failed.

“I am not satisfied. At the end of the day, nothing has come out,“ a parent said while another felt “they (the school management) are not taking responsibility. They have said nothing".

Reflecting the mood of the protesters, a parent said, “I’m scared, angry, it’s not the question of this school alone, it can happen in any other school."

“He (the Chairman) is still not in agreement that it has happened inside the school premises, all our questions are still not answered," said another parent.

The issue figured in the assembly, where former education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought a reply from the government on police allegedly caning the agitating parents, protesting the “inaction" by school management.

“It is unbecoming on the part of police to resort to lathi charge parents. They have been protesting from last three days, sacrificing on water, food and other requirements. Caning protesting parents is bad for government," he said.
