Gujarat pushes for inclusion of maritime cluster under Sagarmala project
The govt also proposes maritime university and a bunkering terminal under the ambitious project
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government on Monday strongly advocated the inclusion of upcoming projects in the state like a maritime cluster, maritime university and a bunkering terminal under the ambitious Sagarmala project.
State finance minister Saurabh Patel put forward the proposal at the first meeting of the National Sagarmala Apex Committee in New Delhi on Monday that was chaired by Union minister for shipping and transport Nitin Gadkari.
Aimed at port-led development in coastal areas, the Sagarmala Project is expected to give a major boost to the economy. For this, the government has lined up about ₹ 70,000 crore for the 12 major ports, according to Gadkari.
The Central government is planning to set up 10 maritime economic regions along the Indian coastline that will cover states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Goa among others, according to a senior government official present at the meeting.
The meeting was attended by the chief ministers of Andra Pradesh, Goa and ministers from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha. Senior officials from other maritime states also were present.
The government of Gujarat will develop a commercial maritime cluster in Gujarat which would focus on the commercial “soft services" of the maritime sector, Patel said.
