Politicians should not remain in active posts beyond an age: Janardan Dwivedi
Active posts should be occupied by people who are younger and have more physical stamina, Dwivedi said
New Delhi: Janardan Dwivedi, general secretary of the Congress party, said on Thursday that there should be an age cut off beyond which one should resign from active politics.
“Generation change is necessary in politics. That is the reason why there is a provision for retirement. I believe that even in politics people should not remain in an active post beyond a certain age," Dwivedi told reporters.
Dwivedi, who is a also a Rajya Sabha member since 2004, is 68 years old.
“My opinion, at least about my party, is that active posts should be occupied by people who are younger and have more physical stamina," he added.
In reply to a question on what should be the cut off age for such a decision, Dwivedi said that while that needs to be discussed, it could be anywhere between 65 and 70.
Dwivedi’s comments comes after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reshuffled its top decision making body, dropping three of its veteran leaders—Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi—and shifting them to an advisory role.
