Panel on women’s security gets approval from Delhi assembly
The commission will also suggest measures to expedite proceedings in criminal cases against women
New Delhi: A special day-long session of the Delhi assembly on Monday passed a resolution to set up a commission of enquiry to deal with issues of women’s security.
Describing the commission and its tasks, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “The commission will make an open call and concentrate on all those cases that have not been looked into. The commission will tell us who was at fault in the cases, which officers are at fault. It will also give suggestions."
The resolution to set up the commission, moved by Sandeep Kumar, minister for women, child and social welfare, was put to vote and adopted unanimously through a voice vote. Opposition leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a walkout.
The commission will also suggest measures to expedite proceedings in criminal cases against women and propose measures to be taken to implement provisions of existing laws as well as the recommendations of the Justice J.S. Verma Committee.
The Justice Verma Committee, appointed after the December 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, recommended amendments to the criminal law for quicker trial and punishment in cases of sexual assault against women.
