Narendra Modi in Japan: What the Chinese media said

The Chinese media hasn't been too charitable about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden visit to Japan

In a sharply-worded editorial on PM Narendra Modi’s veiled reference to Beijing’s expansionist policies, China’s state-run newspaper Global Times remarked, “The increasing intimacy between Tokyo and New Delhi will bring at most psychological comfort in both countries." It added, “If Japan attempts to form a United front centred on India, it will be a crazy fantasy generated by Tokyo’s anxiety of facing a rising Beijing."

The Beijing Youth Daily, in a lengthy report on Modi’s interactions with the Japanese PM Shinzo Abe says that, “the two leaders are showing off intimacy, as they dined, fed the fish and toured historical sites together". (Lines taken from the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC’s) translation.)

The China Daily, in its story underscores the “Japanese media frenzy over the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi." It talks about the assumption on part of the Japanese media “that Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe are working on a plan to strengthen their ties and hedge against the growing power of Beijing". However, the paper, quoting a Chinese foreign ministry official said that Beijing “responded coolly" to these reports.

Huanqiu Shibao (the Chinese edition of The Global Times) states that “China should have the confidence and the will power when it comes to managing Beijing-Delhi ties". It further suggests that, “If Mr Modi’s style deviates too much from the Singh administration (previous PM), China will have to exert appropriate pressure on him." (Translated by the BBC)

Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun, in a piece headlined “China gets in way of Japan, India agreement", wrote: “Concerns about China were apparently the major stumbling block in inconclusive summit talks between the leaders of Japan and India in Tokyo". The piece talks about the failure of the two governments to reach an agreement over the civil nuclear deal between India and Japan, talks for which began four years ago. It also mentions that India put off a decision, purely because of its desire to not “unnecessarily antagonize China".
