Burger King creates social media buzz before India debut
The first store is likely to open by November in New Delhi
New Delhi: American fast food chain Burger King Worldwide Inc. is using social media network Facebook to publicise its planned launch in the capital of a country its competitor McDonald’s Corp. entered about two decades ago.
“India, here we come! First stop – New Delhi!," the company said in a message on its Facebook page.
According to people familiar with the company’s India plans, the first store is likely to open by November in New Delhi, where the brand has picked locations such as Select Citywalk Mall in Saket and Connaught Place in Central Delhi.
In 2013, private equity company Everstone Capital, announced a joint venture with the American fast food chain, famous for it’s Whopper burgers, to establish the chain’s presence in the country.
The Facebook page is said to be mapping geographical trends by responding to user feedback.
“We are glad you wish to have our store in your city. We are recording all such requests to help us determine the location of our next stores in India..," said one of the responses by Burger King’s social media team in reply to a user query on store openings in the southern city of Chennai.
As of 31 December, 2013, the Burger King system consisted of 13,667 restaurants in some 95 countries and US territories. The world’s second largest fast food hamburger chain started as a single restaurant in 1954 in Miami, Florida.
