Mumbai: Union urban development and parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu appealed to people of Maharashtra to vote to for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in forthcoming state assembly elections to ensure Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government gets majority in Rajya Sabha too.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Friday, Naidu said, “As NDA doesn’t have a majority in Rajya Sabha, important Bills like Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill had to be referred to select committee of Rajya Sabha, which delayed the Bill by at least three months."

Due to lack of majority in the upper house, opposition is becoming successful in creating obstacles in country’s progress, he alleged.

However, if voters in Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Jharkhand vote for BJP-led NDA, then the problem of lack of majority in Rajya Sabha will be taken care off, he said. Members of legislative assemblies (MLAs) are voters in Rajya Sabha elections.

Accusing Congress leadership for practicing double standards, Naidu said, “Congress president Sonia Gandhi claims we have nothing new to offer, we are carrying forward programmes of previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. If that is the case, why is Congress opposing every move of Modi government?" Naidu asked.

Calling chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s decision to boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s function in Nagpur on Thursday unfortunate, Naidu said, “We can understand Chavan’s compulsions. He could not have acted differently when orders came from above."

Indicating that the Modi-led government wants to replace UPA government’s flagship programme Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) with a new programme, Naidu said, “The JNNURM programme ended in March 2014 and at present government is studying best practices in various states under the program and with this new learning, soon a new program will be launched."
