Pawan Kalyan tops Google search charts among celebrity candidates

Actress Ramya appears second, while AAP's Kumar Vishwas stands third in Google search rankings

New Delhi: Actors, writers, comedians and other celebrities contesting the general election are being searched extensively online by netizens, according to Google Inc. search trends released on Wednesday.

Telugu actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi’s brother Pawan Kalyan, who recently launched a political party called JanSena, tops the search charts. He is followed by actress Ramya (Divya Spandana), who contesting from Mandya in Karnataka, according to a Google release.

Poet Kumar Vishwas from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged third in the search rankings. He is contesting from the Congress party bastion of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, represented by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

Online searches for Bollywood actress Nagma, contesting for the first time on a Congress ticket from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, numbered nearly double those of the veteran actress Hema Malini, who is standing for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Mathura (UP).

Actress Rakhi Sawant gained significant response online with the launch of her political party Rashtriya Aam Party in Mumbai.

Other celebrities in list included stand-up comic Raju Srivastava, who has stepped down as the Samajwadi Party candidate from Kanpur (UP), Bhojpuri superstar Manoj Tiwari, the BJP candidate from Northeast Delhi, senior Bollywood actress Jaya Prada, the Rashtriya Lok Dal candidate from Bijnor (UP), and Bengali filmstar Dev who is contesting from West Midnapore in West Bengal on a Trinamool Congress ticket.

The clash between actresses Gul Panag from AAP and Kirron Kher from BJP in the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat has also created a buzz online, as per the search trends.

“Celebrities have always been a major draw for political parties in the Indian electoral process especially in the campaigning phase but they are expected to play a bigger role in this election season," Google said.
