Bengaluru: State-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, India’s busiest container gateway, loaded a record 4.46 million standard containers in the year ended 31 March.

The port located near Mumbai handled 4.16 million standard containers last year.

J.N. Port has three container loading facilities run separately by DP World Ltd, a consortium of APM Terminals Management BV and the Container Corp. of India Ltd, and the third by the port itself. The three terminals are designed to handle a combined 3.6 million standard containers a year.

Of the total 4.46 million standard containers handled by the port in the year ended 31 March, the terminal run by DP World handled 1.16 million standard containers while the facility operated by the APM Terminals-CONCOR consortium loaded 2.01 million standard containers.

The third terminal run by the government-owned port itself handled 1.29 million standard containers.

J.N. Port loads more than half of India’s container cargo shipped through its ports every year.

“We handled record containers this year by making some modifications in the gate entry system and parking facilities as part of ease of doing business so that we can take the containers in and out faster," a spokesman for the port said.

He said that the port had to resort to these measures because it was unable to build new terminals in the last eight years to cater to demand.

But this is about to end.

A new terminal constructed by DP World with a capacity to handle 800,000 standard containers a year is slated to start operations this month.

PSA International Pte Ltd is also setting up a new container loading facility with a capacity to handle 4.8 million standard containers a year. The first phase of the new terminal is expected to start operations in 2017.

PSA International, the world’s biggest container port operator by volume, is fully-owned by Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd, the sovereign wealth fund of Singapore.

J.N. Port is expected to handle 23 million standard containers by 2020, according to a 10-year plan unveiled by the shipping ministry.

In terms of overall volume, the port handled 63.8 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in the year to 31 March, up from 62.3 mt loaded last year.
