New Delhi: Rohit Nandan, chairman and managing director (CMD) of Air India Ltd, is likely to continue to lead the state-owned airline after the Uttar Pradesh government allowed the civil servant to continue to be in central deputation for two more years, according to two government officials aware of the matter who declined to be named.

The aviation ministry communicated the decision of the state government this week to the government’s appointments committee. Aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju had already cleared Nandan’s extension a few weeks ago after which the ministry sought a two-year extension for Nandan, who completes his three-year term this fortnight, from the central government.

“It’s on track," said one of the two officials cited above, referring to clearances from the appointments committee. “There is no plan B."

Nandan, a 1982 batch Indian Administrative Service officer, is the first chairman to have completed his term since a botched Air India-Indian Airlines merger in 2007. Since then, the airline had seen the entry and exit of four chairmen—V. Thulasidas, Raghu Menon, Bharat Bhushan and Arvind Jadhav—in quick succession. These years were also marked by labour unrest related to pay and promotions.

Mint reported on 8 July that five state-owned aviation companies and agencies—Air India, Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (Aera), Airports Authority of India (AAI), helicopter operator Pawan Hans and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security—could soon become headless. Aera chairman Yashwant Bhave completed his term on 15 July, leaving the airport regulator without a chief.

AAI has had no chairman for the past six months. Alok Sinha, joint secretary in the aviation ministry who was handling the temporary charge of AAI, is moving from this deputation, said a second government official. The aviation ministry conducted interviews a few weeks ago for a chairman but re-advertised the position.

The ministry last fortnight also conducted interviews for the Aera chairman but it is likely that a fresh call for candidates may be issued, this official said.
